PC in the Cloud: Microsoft Announces the General Availability of Windows 365

As already anticipated at Inspire 2021, the annual conference that brings together the entire Microsoft partner ecosystem, yesterday the company announced the general availability of Windows 365, its operating system in the cloud.

In a context in which hybrid work gained more and more relevance, Windows 365 offers people the ability to experience Windows 10 or Windows 11 (when available) from any location and device. In other words, users will now be able to connect to their content, applications, data and settings online, simply and securely.

With this launch, Microsoft introduces a new way of experiencing computing that adapts to the times: the PC in the cloud or Cloud PC.

“With Windows 365, we’re creating a new category: the Cloud PC. Just like applications were brought to the cloud with SaaS, we are now bringing the operating system to the cloud, providing organizations with greater flexibility and a secure way to empower their workforce to be more productive and connected, regardless of location,” said Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO, Microsoft.

New features of Windows 365

One of the main features of Windows 365 is that it provides an instant boot experience that allows users to move all their applications, data and customized settings from the cloud to any device, including Windows, Mac, iPad, Android and, soon, Linux devices as well. In this way, users with this tool will be able to continue their work, just as they left it, from anywhere, as the state of their PC in the cloud will remain the same on any device.

Although this operating system will not present major changes with respect to the desktop version of Windows 10, some new features can be highlighted:

  • The change of location of the home button, which will now go in the center of the screen.
  • The emergence of a new Microsoft Store, much more open to new applications from in-house developers and direct competitors.
  • Another feature to highlight has to do with security. In addition to taking advantage of the potential of the cloud, Windows 365 is governed by the principles of Zero Trust. Information is stored in the cloud, not on the device, following Microsoft’s security model.

The company also offers two versions of Windows 365 that fit the needs of each company: Windows 365 Business, for organizations with up to 300 employees, and Windows 365 Enterprise, for organizations with more than 300 employees.
